Illustration Evaluation: Sosu's Call

Sosu's Call  follows a boy, Sosu, who lives in a narrowed village with his mom, dad, brother and sister, and dog Fafa.  The catch, he has weak legs, so he cannot walk.  Because of his disability, he cannot go to school or provide any helpfulness to his village.  He was seen as bad luck by other villagers, their beliefs drove Sosu to remain at home during the days, not doing anything of use.  Until one day when a storm comes and no one in the village is there to protect it.  Sosu and Fafa band together and go for the drums so that they can call for the villagers.  The journey is difficult and dangerous, Fafa leading the way.  Then, without even knowing how to play the drums, Sosu starts banging on them.  This leads the villagers to come and save everyone, but it was Sosu and Fafa that saved the village with their call.  Sosu is asked what he would like, and he said to walk and go to school.  So in return, Sosu is given a wheel...

Working Men/Women

Today we are going to look at trade jobs, and the importance of them.  After reading The Night Worker , I thought harder on jobs no one really thinks about off the bat: trade jobs.  In this story, a boy named Alex wants to go with his dad to his night job, which is construction.  They see a bunch of other workers in the night time: police, mail personnel, etc... By seeing and experiencing a job in construction, Alex is moved to want to be like his father, to become a night worker. There are a lot of jobs like in the book including construction, plumbing, carpenters, etc... Other jobs that are necessary that are put on the back burner are service jobs: teachers, emergency personnel, government workers (mailmen).  The majority of these jobs aren't something students go to college for.  They train with companies or special schools designed for specific jobs; hard-working jobs.  These are all positions that need to be filled too, that way we have protection, ...

Welcome to Freedom For The Future! This is a collective of social challenges children face, shared through children's books. The problem we have in this country is that the social problems faced by many are still prominent. There have been steps in the right direction in terms of social justice, but not enough.  I will be dissecting children's books to exemplify problems children of disability or color face, how they are or should be represented, and how we as a nation can help find Freedom For The Future!
